Woman Extricated, Airlifted To Trauma Center After Crashing Into St. Mary's County Tree

A woman suffered serious injuries after losing control, crashing into a tree, and getting trapped inside her vehicle in St. Mary's County, according to the sheriff's office.

Chaptico resident Anita Renee Courtney, 40, had to be rescued from her totaled vehicle shortly before 9:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 4 at the intersection of Maddox Road and Rivendell Way.

According to investigators, Courtney was driving a 2011 Crown Victoria west on Maddox Road when, for unknown reasons, crossed over the center line and struck the tree. She was extricated from the Ford and airlifted to Washington Hospital Center for treatment of what were described as life-threatening injuries.

She was listed in stable condition as of Friday afternoon.

The crash remains under investigation.
